The Diaz Ocean View Hotel stands on the dune at Diaz Beach on the western side of Mossel Bay, close enough to the sand that a boardwalk runs from the property down to it. It is a four-star hotel of moderate size where most rooms face the sea, and the heated indoor pool makes it work in winter as well as summer.

Families who want the beach at the bottom of a boardwalk; couples who want a full sea view without paying Plettenberg Bay prices; travellers stopping on the N2 who would rather wake up looking at surf than at a car park.
Diaz Beach is a residential stretch rather than a village, so there is little to walk to beyond the sand.
Location
Diaz Beach lies south-west of the Mossel Bay town centre, a long open beach facing the Indian Ocean, and the hotel sits directly above it. The centre of town, the harbour and the Bartolomeu Dias museum complex are about ten minutes by car, and the N2 is a few minutes inland.

Rooms and style at the Diaz Ocean View Hotel
The room list is unusually granular. Categories run from Small Double and Standard Double rooms with a partial sea view, through Standard and Deluxe Doubles with a full sea view, to King and Twin rooms with full sea views, a Deluxe Family room with a sofa bed, a wheelchair-accessible room without a view, and a penthouse let on an exclusive-use basis. Bathrooms vary between bath only, shower only and both, and the booking pages say so explicitly.
The interiors are pale, coastal and simple: white walls, white bedding, grey and green accents and sliding doors onto balconies. It is comfortable rather than designed, and the view does the work.
Facilities at the Diaz Ocean View Hotel
There is a heated indoor swimming pool, which on this coast is more useful than an outdoor one for eight months of the year, a gym, an intimate spa, and a restaurant with sea-view dining, indoor and outdoor seating and a cocktail list. Direct beach access runs from the property down a boardwalk to the sand.
There is no golf course and no conference wing. The hotel is built around the beach, the pool and the dining room.
Who should consider the Diaz Ocean View Hotel
Consider it if the sea view is the reason for the stop. Mossel Bay is the first sensible overnight on a Garden Route drive from Cape Town, and very little accommodation here puts you directly above a beach. A heated indoor pool also makes it a genuine winter option.

Trade-offs, honestly
Four things to weigh:
- Not all rooms have a full sea view; several categories are explicitly partial, and one has none at all.
- Diaz Beach is exposed ocean with surf and currents, and it is not the sheltered swimming water that Santos Beach in town offers.
- There is nothing within walking distance except the beach, so dinner means the hotel restaurant or a drive.
- Bathroom fittings differ by category, so a bath or a shower is something to check rather than assume.
The dune position also means wind; the south-easter blows hard here in summer.
Explore the area
The St Blaize hiking trail runs roughly 13.5 kilometres along the cliffs from the lighthouse at the Point west towards Dana Bay, and the western end is close to Diaz Beach. It is the best walk on this part of the coast and can be done in sections.
In town, the Bartolomeu Dias museum complex is built around a full-size replica of the caravel that reached this bay in 1488, and the Post Office Tree stands beside it. Santos Beach, north-facing and sheltered, is the town’s swimming beach, and boat trips run to Seal Island. An hour east, the Wilderness section of the Garden Route National Park has forest walks and a lagoon.
Getting there and getting around
Mossel Bay is about 390 kilometres from Cape Town on the N2, roughly four and a half hours before stops, which makes it the natural first night of a Garden Route trip. George Airport is around forty-five minutes east and takes direct flights from Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban.

How the Diaz Ocean View Hotel compares
Against the hotels in the town centre you lose the walk to the museum and the restaurants and gain a beach below the balcony. Against a self-catering flat at Diaz, the Diaz Ocean View Hotel adds a restaurant, a spa, a gym and an indoor pool. Against pushing on to Wilderness, you save an hour of driving on the first day.
Practical notes for a stay at the Diaz Ocean View Hotel
Mossel Bay has one of the mildest and driest climates on the Garden Route, which is why it works as a winter stop when Knysna and Plettenberg Bay are wet. Southern right whales pass the bay from roughly June to November and are often visible from the balconies.
December to mid-January is the local peak and the beach fills with South African families. March, April, October and November are the best value. The heated indoor pool means a June booking is not the compromise it would be elsewhere.
