The Western Cape is a driving province, and where you sleep decides how much of it you actually see. Cape Town works as a single base for the Peninsula, the Winelands and the first stretch of the Whale Coast, but anything beyond Hermanus is a different trip: the Garden Route alone runs roughly four hours of coastline from Mossel Bay to Plettenberg Bay, and the interior routes through the Klein Karoo and the Cape Karoo add distance again.

Broadly, the accommodation regions divide into Cape Town and the Peninsula, the Cape Winelands around Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl, the Whale Coast from Kleinmond through Hermanus to Gansbaai, and the Garden Route from Mossel Bay east to Plettenberg Bay. Each has a different high season, a different price rhythm and a different reason to stay more than one night. Seasonality matters as much as geography. Cape Town and the Atlantic Seaboard peak from December to February and book out months ahead over the festive weeks; the Whale Coast peaks with the whales between roughly June and November; and the Karoo towns are at their most comfortable in spring and autumn. Booking the right region at the wrong time of year is the most common and most expensive mistake.
