Whale Coast Accommodation
The Whale Coast runs east from Kleinmond along the edge of Walker Bay, and for roughly June to November it is one of the best land-based whale-watching stretches anywhere. Hermanus is the centre of it: the cliff path above the town gives close views without a boat, and the accommodation ranges from cliff-front guest houses in the Old Village to larger hotels behind the lagoon at Voelklip and Eastcliff. Booking well ahead matters here in a way it does not elsewhere on the coast, because whale season and the September school holidays overlap.
Away from Hermanus the character changes quickly. Stanford, twenty minutes inland along the Klein River, is a quiet village of restored cottages and river frontage and works as a calmer base with the same drives available. Gansbaai and De Kelders sit further east on an exposed, dramatic coastline and are the departure point for shark cage diving, with fewer but more individual places to stay. Betty’s Bay and Kleinmond, on the western approach, are the closest to Cape Town and the easiest to fold into a day trip. Our regional overview is in Hermanus and the Whale Coast.
