Cape Winelands Accommodation

The Cape Winelands are close enough to Cape Town to visit in a day and much better as a base for two or three nights, mostly because the driving and the tasting do not mix. Stellenbosch is the largest of the three towns and the most walkable: a university centre with oak-lined streets, a dense restaurant scene and dozens of estates within fifteen minutes of the centre, which makes it the practical choice if you want to leave the car parked in the evening.

Franschhoek is smaller, prettier and more expensive, built around a single main road of restaurants and galleries with the Huguenot valley closing off the end; it suits a short, indulgent stay and the wine tram works well from there. Paarl is the least polished of the three and the best value, spread along the Berg River under its granite domes, and it sits closest to the N1 if you are continuing to the Karoo or the Garden Route. Farm stays on the estates themselves are a fourth option and a genuinely different experience from a town hotel: quieter, further from restaurants, and usually built around a view.
