The Bayview Hotel stands on the corner of Main and Gibb Street in the middle of Plettenberg Bay, thirty-six rooms in a recently refurbished building within about 800 metres of two of the town’s Blue Flag beaches. It is the practical choice in Plett: central, mid-priced and walkable.
Best for
Travellers who want to park the car and walk to dinner; families who need a family suite in town; anyone stopping one or two nights on a Garden Route drive who does not want to be out on a hillside.
It is a town hotel rather than a beach lodge or a country retreat. The sea is a walk away, not below the window of every room.
Location
Main Street is the spine of Plettenberg Bay, and the hotel is on it, surrounded by shops, galleries, restaurants and bars. Two Blue Flag beaches are within a short walk, the Keurbooms River and Lookout Beach are visible from the upper floors, and the Tsitsikamma mountains close the view to the east.
Robberg Nature Reserve is about ten minutes by car and the Crags about twenty. Our Plettenberg Bay destination guide explains how the town, the beaches and the reserves fit together.
Rooms and style at the Bayview Hotel
There are thirty-six en-suite rooms across eight categories: classic rooms and classic rooms with a balcony, premium rooms, deluxe rooms and deluxe rooms with a balcony, triple deluxe rooms, a honeymoon suite and a family suite. That range is unusual for a hotel of this size and it is the reason the property suits so many kinds of traveller.
The rooms have been refurbished recently and are pale, coastal and uncluttered: white walls, timber floors, blue and grey textiles. Balcony categories are worth the difference here, because the outlook towards the estuary and the mountains is genuinely good from the upper floors.
Facilities at the Bayview Hotel
Adi’s Kitchen, an independently run restaurant, occupies the ground floor and handles breakfast and meals through the day. There is an on-site spa and beauty salon, a children’s corner, conference and meeting rooms, free parking on site and wireless internet, and the hotel runs on backup power so that load shedding does not interrupt a stay.
There is no swimming pool and no gym. In a hotel this central, the beach does the work a pool would do elsewhere.
Who should consider the Bayview Hotel
Consider it if walking to dinner matters to you. Plettenberg Bay’s accommodation is mostly spread along hillsides and beachfront drives, and very little of it puts you in the middle of the town. For a one or two night stop on a longer drive, that convenience is worth a great deal.
Travellers who want a resort, a pool and a sea-view balcony over the sand should look further out. Our Garden Route accommodation guide compares the options.
Trade-offs, honestly
Four things to weigh:
- There is no pool, which matters in a January heatwave with children.
- A Main Street position means street noise, particularly in high season and at weekends.
- Eight room categories in thirty-six rooms means real variation; the classic rooms without a balcony are the plainest.
- The restaurant is run independently of the hotel, so its hours and service are not entirely the hotel’s to guarantee.
Ask which floor you are on: the view improves considerably with height.
Explore the area
Robberg Nature Reserve is the outstanding walk here: a rock peninsula with three route options, from a short loop above the seal colony to the full nine-kilometre circuit out to the point. In town, Central Beach, Robberg 5 and Lookout Beach are all Blue Flag, and the Keurbooms estuary north of town is good for boat trips and paddling.
East of Plett, the Crags has a group of wildlife sanctuaries and the Bloukrans bungee bridge, and about an hour on is the Storms River mouth in the Tsitsikamma section of the Garden Route National Park, with its suspension bridges across the gorge.
Getting there and getting around
Most travellers fly to George, about ninety minutes west by road, or drive the N2. Cape Town is roughly 520 kilometres away, about six and a half hours before stops, and Port Elizabeth is around 230 kilometres east. Plettenberg Bay has a small airport with seasonal scheduled flights.
You still want a car for Robberg, the Crags and Tsitsikamma, but this is the one address in Plett where you will not need it in the evening. Knysna is thirty minutes west. Our seven-day Garden Route itinerary shows where Plett nights sit.
How the Bayview Hotel compares
Against the beachfront lodges you lose the sand across the road and gain the town at the door for considerably less money. Against the country and river lodges outside Plett, the Bayview Hotel loses the setting and gains convenience. Against a guesthouse in town, you gain a restaurant, a spa, meeting rooms and backup power.
Practical notes for a stay at the Bayview Hotel
Plettenberg Bay is at its busiest from mid-December to mid-January, when the town’s population multiplies, restaurant tables need booking and parking on Main Street becomes competitive. That is precisely when a central hotel with its own parking earns its rate.
March, April, October and November are the best value. Southern right whales are in the bay from roughly June to November, and the viewpoints along the beachfront and at Robberg are the places to watch from.
Before you book the Bayview Hotel
Ask which category and which floor, and whether the room has a balcony, because those three things account for most of the difference in experience. Confirm whether breakfast is included in the quoted rate, whether the restaurant is open on your dates, and what the current cancellation window is at checkout. If you need the family suite, book it early; there is only one. More options across the province are in our Western Cape accommodation guide.
Current rates and availability
We do not publish rates for the Bayview Hotel, because they move constantly with season and demand. Use the availability button on this page to see what the property currently costs on your dates, what is included and what the cancellation terms are. The booking provider is the merchant of record; Cape Town Travel Guide does not set prices, hold inventory or take payment.
