Cape West Coast Accommodation

The Cape West Coast runs north from Cape Town along the R27 to Langebaan and Saldanha and inland on the N7 towards Citrusdal and Clanwilliam, and it holds three quite different kinds of stay. The lagoon at Langebaan and the West Coast National Park form a large protected wetland with unusually blue-green water. The fishing villages, Paternoster foremost among them, give a strong sense of place with very little development. And the Cederberg behind Clanwilliam is a genuine mountain wilderness within a few hours of the city.

Accommodation follows those three. Langebaan has the widest spread on the coast, with lagoon-facing apartments, guesthouses and resort-style properties. Paternoster and the smaller villages are almost entirely guesthouses and self-catering cottages. Inland, Clanwilliam and Citrusdal supply the conventional guesthouse and hotel stock, while much of the mountain accommodation is on private farms and booked directly with them rather than through booking sites.

Two things drive demand. The spring wildflower season, typically concentrated in August and September and dependent on the previous winter's rainfall, fills the region and cannot be predicted far in advance. And the villages are small, so long weekends and school holidays take up most of the available stock. Coast and mountains pair naturally into a four- or five-night loop north from Cape Town, which is worth planning around a base at each end rather than moving every night.
