Location
Stellenbosch is the second-oldest town in South Africa and the working centre of the largest of the Cape wine districts. The old core is compact and walkable — Dorp Street, Church Street and the Braak are within a few blocks of each other — while the wine wards that carry the town’s name spread out for twenty kilometres in every direction, up the Jonkershoek and Banhoek valleys, over Helshoogte, along the R44 towards the Helderberg, and out across Devon Valley, Bottelary and the Polkadraai hills.

Getting there
Stellenbosch is about 50 km from Cape Town and roughly 35 km from Cape Town International Airport, an hour or less by road on the N1 and R304 or via the N2 and R44. Most visitors drive; the town is also on the Metrorail line from Cape Town, and shuttle and wine-tour operators run daily from the city. A car is the practical way to reach properties on the outlying farms, and designated-driver or tour arrangements are worth planning if you intend to taste.

Booking this property
Harvest runs from roughly February into April and is the busiest and most expensive stretch of the year, with the town also full during university term events. Summer, from December to March, is hot and dry and books out early. Winter is green, wet and much quieter, and is when rates on the farms are at their lowest.
