South African Tourism records that Swellendam was established in 1745, making it the third-oldest town in South Africa after Cape Town and Stellenbosch, and that it sits among the foothills of the Langeberg mountains. The Drostdy Museum is the principal heritage attraction of the town. Bontebok National Park, the smallest national park in South Africa, lies just outside Swellendam and the Marloth Nature Reserve adjoins it on the mountain side, with Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve further inland and De Hoop Nature Reserve south on the Overberg coast.
