Hout Bay is a working fishing harbour and a residential valley on the Atlantic side of the peninsula, reached from the city either over Constantia Nek or along the coast road through Camps Bay. Chapman’s Peak Drive begins at its southern end and runs on a ledge above the sea towards Noordhoek.

The harbour, the beach and the Bay Harbour Market are all within the valley. Camps Bay is about twenty minutes north along the coast, the City Bowl around half an hour, and Constantia and its wine estates roughly fifteen minutes over Constantia Nek. Chapman’s Peak Drive leads south towards Cape Point.

Cape Town’s high season runs from December to February, when the coastal and Waterfront properties fill earliest and rates peak; the quieter months from May to August usually carry the lowest rates, and the weather is at its wettest.
