Farm 215 is a self-catering nature retreat on an 800-hectare private reserve in the hills behind Gansbaai, where the fynbos runs down towards the sea and the reserve never holds more than about twenty guests at a time. It is not a hotel: you take a suite or a house, cook your own food, and the point of the place is the silence.

Best for

Couples who want a private hot tub and no neighbours; walkers and birders; families or two couples taking the hill house; groups booking the whole farm for a wedding or a get-together.

There is no restaurant and no room service. If you want to be looked after rather than left alone, this is the wrong property.

Location

The reserve lies inland from Gansbaai in the Uilenkraal valley, in the mountains between the Whale Coast and the Overberg wheat country. Gansbaai and the shark cage diving boats are about twenty-five minutes away, Hermanus roughly forty-five, and Cape Town around two hours.

The land is lowland and mountain fynbos, one of the richest plant communities on earth, and the reserve is a sanctuary for birds and for the elusive Cape leopard. Our Gansbaai destination guide covers the coast below.

Accommodation and style at Farm 215

There are three large freestanding Fynbos Suites, each with a private terrace, a wood-fired stove, a king bed, a full bathroom and a fully equipped kitchen, plus a private wood-fired hot tub and a summer splash pool. The Fynbos Hill house sits higher up among trees, sleeps four in two bedrooms, and adds a walled garden, a covered braai area, a bar with an indoor braai and a small office space.

The architecture is contemporary and low: timber, glass, flat roofs and long horizontal decks that face the fynbos rather than the road. Water and cooking run on gas, so a power cut does not interrupt a stay.

Facilities at Farm 215

Every unit has its own kitchen, its own braai and its own wood-fired hot tub, which is the substitute for a hotel’s shared facilities. There are walking trails across the reserve, wireless internet, and the option to book the whole farm for a private event.

What is not there: a restaurant, a bar, a spa building, a gym or a reception desk in the usual sense. Bring food, or arrange provisions before you arrive.

Who should consider Farm 215

Consider it if you want two or three nights of genuine quiet within reach of the shark cage diving boats and the Hermanus cliff path, or if you are building a Whale Coast trip that mixes a town base with a nature one. It also suits guests who want to cook, which on this coast means excellent local fish and Overberg lamb.

Travellers who want to walk to restaurants should stay in Hermanus or Stanford. Our Western Cape accommodation guide compares the alternatives.

Trade-offs, honestly

Four things to weigh:

  • Self-catering means self-catering: the nearest shops are in Gansbaai, twenty-five minutes away, so plan the food before you arrive.
  • The access road is rural, and a small car will manage it but slowly.
  • There is no restaurant, so every dinner is one you cook.
  • With only a handful of units, dates go quickly over long weekends and holidays.

Fynbos country is also fire country in late summer, and the reserve is exposed to the south-easter in December and January.

Explore the area

Gansbaai is the shark cage diving capital of South Africa, and the boats leave from Kleinbaai harbour twenty-five minutes from the reserve. De Kelders, on the cliffs above Walker Bay, is one of the best land-based whale-watching spots on the coast between June and November, and the Klipgat caves there hold evidence of some of the earliest modern humans.

Inland, the Overberg wheat fields and the fynbos reserves managed by CapeNature make good driving and walking country. Stanford, twenty minutes north, has a village green, a river and several good farm producers; our Stanford guide covers it.

Getting there and getting around

Cape Town is about two hours away by road, either over Sir Lowry’s Pass and through the Overberg or along the coast on the R44 and R43 through Hermanus. Cape Town International is the nearest airport.

A car is essential; there is no public transport and the reserve is well off the main road. Hermanus is forty-five minutes away, Gansbaai twenty-five and Cape Agulhas about an hour and a half. Our seven-day Whale Coast itinerary shows how the towns link up.

How Farm 215 compares

Against the cliff-top lodges at De Kelders you lose the sea view and gain 800 hectares of your own. Against the big private reserve nearby, Farm 215 is far smaller, self-catering and a fraction of the price. Against a guest house in Gansbaai, you gain space, silence and a hot tub, and you lose breakfast.

Practical notes for a stay at Farm 215

Fynbos flowers through the year rather than in a single season, but the reserve is at its most colourful from late winter into spring, roughly August to October, which is also when the southern right whales are in Walker Bay. Summer is hot, dry and windy; winter is green and cool, and the wood-fired stoves earn their place.

Shark cage diving runs year round, weather permitting, with the clearest water usually in the cooler months. Book the boats before you arrive rather than on the day.

Before you book Farm 215

Decide between a Fynbos Suite and the Fynbos Hill house, because one is a suite for two and the other a two-bedroom house for four. Confirm what is provided in the kitchen, whether firewood is supplied for the stove and the hot tub, how far the nearest shop is, and what the current cancellation window is at checkout. Ask about road access if you are hiring a small car. More options across the province are in our Western Cape accommodation guide.
