Cliff Lodge sits on the cliffs at De Kelders, directly above the sea and looking across Walker Bay towards Hermanus. It is a five-room guest house rather than a hotel, about five kilometres from Gansbaai and roughly twenty-five minutes from Hermanus, and the position is the entire proposition.
Best for
Whale-season travellers who want the bay from their own balcony without paying Hermanus prices; couples who prefer a small owner-run guest house to a hotel; visitors doing the Gansbaai marine tours who would rather sleep on the cliffs than in town.
It is not a hotel and does not pretend to be: five rooms, ten guests, breakfast on the deck and not much else.
Location
Cliff Lodge is in De Kelders, the cliff-top village on the eastern side of Walker Bay. Gansbaai is about five kilometres away and Hermanus around twenty-five minutes back around the bay. The Klipgat caves and the coastal walk are close by, and the boat operators running shark and marine tours work out of Kleinbaai harbour just beyond Gansbaai.
Rooms and style at Cliff Lodge
There are five rooms, each sleeping two: an ocean suite and four rooms named for the points of the compass. All are en suite and all have their own patio or deck. Because there are only five, availability in whale season is genuinely tight and outlook differs between them, so ask which one you are booking.
Facilities at Cliff Lodge
There is a sea-front swimming pool, a guest lounge with a fireplace, an all-weather conservatory facing the water and a large ocean-view balcony. Massage treatments can be arranged, and breakfast is served on the sea-front deck. Dinner means driving into Gansbaai or Hermanus.
Who should consider Cliff Lodge
Consider it if the whales are the reason for the trip and you want to watch them from a chair rather than a boat. Cliff Lodge suits two or three nights on the eastern side of Walker Bay, combining land-based whale watching, the Klipgat cave walk and a morning on the water out of Kleinbaai.
Trade-offs, honestly
No property suits every trip, and Cliff Lodge is a better fit for some than others. These are the points worth weighing before you book.
You must drive for dinner. De Kelders is residential. Gansbaai has options; Hermanus has many more and is twenty-five minutes away.
Five rooms. Availability disappears early in whale season, and a small guest house cannot flex the way a hotel can.
Not a hotel. No restaurant, no room service, no front desk at midnight. That is the trade for the position and the price.
Wild animals. Whales are in the bay roughly June to December, but no property can promise sightings on your dates.

Getting there and getting around
Cape Town International is roughly 160 km away, generally two to two and a half hours by the N2 and the R43 through Hermanus and Stanford. A car is essential here: there is no visitor transport in De Kelders, and everything from restaurants to boat departures involves driving. Parking is on site at Cliff Lodge.
How Cliff Lodge compares
Against a Hermanus hotel, you trade walkable restaurants for a quieter cliff, better value and an uninterrupted view across the bay. Against a Gansbaai guesthouse in town, Cliff Lodge gains the sea frontage. Against a self-catering house at De Kelders, you gain breakfast, a pool and someone who knows the tide and the boats.
Practical notes for a stay at Cliff Lodge
De Kelders is one of the best land-based whale-watching spots on this coast, and it is quieter than the Hermanus cliff path. Southern right whales come into Walker Bay between roughly June and December, and from the cliffs here you look across the whole bay. Bring binoculars; the animals are close but not always at the foot of the rocks.
The Klipgat caves, part of the Walker Bay Nature Reserve, are within walking distance and have a documented archaeological record of early human occupation. The coastal path along the cliffs is free and worth an hour. Boat-based marine tours, including shark viewing, operate out of Kleinbaai harbour beyond Gansbaai and leave early — check your departure time before booking dinner the night before.
Seasonally, June to November is whale season and the reason most visitors come. December to February is hot and busy with South African holidaymakers. Autumn is quiet, mild and cheap, but the bay is empty of whales.
Before you book Cliff Lodge
Ask which of the five rooms you are getting and what it looks onto. Confirm whether breakfast is included in the rate you are quoted. If you plan a boat trip, book it separately and early in season. Confirm the current cancellation window at checkout, since a small property’s terms are often stricter than a hotel’s.
Current rates and availability
We do not publish rates for Cliff Lodge, because they move sharply with whale season and demand. Use the availability button on this page to see what the property currently costs on your dates, what is included and what the cancellation terms are. The booking provider is the merchant of record; Cape Town Travel Guide does not set prices, hold inventory or take payment.
