Chapter House Boutique Hotel occupies a restored 1888 mission house in the middle of Franschhoek, seventeen rooms around a courtyard pool with the mountains standing over the village. The building served as the local school until 1974, and the restoration has kept the high ceilings, the original fireplace and the long verandah.

Location
The hotel is on the main street side of the village, a short stroll from the restaurants, galleries and tasting rooms that make Franschhoek what it is. The Franschhoek mountains close the valley at the top of the road, and the estates begin a few minutes’ drive out of town.

Rooms and style at Chapter House
There are seventeen rooms in three categories — Classic, Deluxe and Superior Deluxe — all with king beds, en-suite bathrooms, in-room laptop safes, LED televisions, air-conditioning, a pod coffee machine, Ronnefeldt teas and free wireless internet.
The design mixes heritage and local contemporary work: commissioned pieces by South African artists, handpicked furniture and fabrics, timber floors and a lounge with very high ceilings and a generous original fireplace. Upper rooms sit under the pitched roof, which gives them character and, in some cases, less height.
Facilities at Chapter House
There is a swimming pool in the walled courtyard with loungers and umbrellas, a bar and a breakfast room that both open onto the original verandah, and a lounge built around the fireplace. Breakfast is a cold continental buffet with home-baked breads, local cheeses and charcuterie plus made-to-order hot dishes, and there is an all-day menu and a pool menu for light meals.
There is no spa building and no dinner restaurant. The guest services team books tables and tastings, which in this village is the useful facility.
Who should consider Chapter House
Consider it if eating well is the point of the trip and you would rather walk to dinner than drive to it. Two or three nights works: one for the village restaurants, one for the wine tram, one for the pass and the estates further out.

Trade-offs, honestly
Four things to weigh:
- There is no dinner served at the hotel, so every evening is a restaurant booking in the village.
- A village-centre position means some street noise, particularly in high season.
- An 1888 building means rooms differ in shape, ceiling height and stair access; ask before booking if that matters.
- Seventeen rooms sell out early over harvest, Christmas and long weekends.
The pool is a courtyard pool rather than a vineyard-facing one; the view here belongs to the mountains above the roofline.
Explore the area
Franschhoek was settled by French Huguenot refugees from 1688 and now holds the densest concentration of good restaurants in South Africa. The Franschhoek Wine Tram loops the valley’s estates on a hop-on, hop-off basis and is the sensible way to taste without driving.
The Huguenot Memorial Museum stands at the top of the main street, and the Franschhoek Pass, built on Andrew Geddes Bain’s alignment, climbs over to Villiersdorp and the Theewaterskloof dam. The industry body Wines of South Africa is useful background on the appellations before you taste.
Getting there and getting around
Cape Town International Airport is about fifty minutes away and central Cape Town roughly an hour and a quarter. Franschhoek is reached from the N1 through Paarl, or over the Helshoogte Pass from Stellenbosch, which is the more scenic route.

How Chapter House compares
Against the wine-estate hotels outside the village you lose the vineyards and gain the restaurants at the end of the street. Against the other small hotels in Franschhoek, Chapter House offers more history and a pool, and no dinner service. Against a self-catering cottage, you gain breakfast, a bar and a guest services team who can get you a table.
Practical notes for a stay at Chapter House
Harvest runs from roughly February to April, which is the most interesting and the busiest time in the valley, and autumn colour follows in April and May. Winter, from June to August, is wet, green and quiet, and it is far the easiest season in which to get a table at the best-known restaurants.
Franschhoek fills completely between mid-December and mid-January. If you are coming then, book both the room and the restaurants months ahead.

Ask which category and which floor, because Classic, Deluxe and Superior Deluxe differ in size and the upper rooms sit under the roof. Confirm whether breakfast is included in the quoted rate, whether the pool menu operates on your dates, and what the current cancellation window is at checkout.
