Birkenhead House occupies a cliff-top promontory between two beach coves at Voëlklip, on the quieter eastern edge of Hermanus. It is part of The Royal Portfolio, the same group as The Silo Hotel in Cape Town, and it trades the town centre for a residential setting with the whole of Walker Bay in front of it.

Birkenhead House is at Voëlklip, a few minutes’ drive east of central Hermanus, perched above the beaches at the quieter end of the cliff path. Grotto Beach and Kammabaai are close by, the Hemel-en-Aarde wine valley is about twenty minutes inland, and Stanford and Gansbaai are further east along the R43.

Consider it if the hotel is meant to be the destination. Birkenhead House works best for a two- or three-night stay where you eat on site at least once, use the spa, walk the cliff path from the quiet end and take one boat trip. It also pairs naturally with a Cape Town stay at the same group’s city property.
Trade-offs, honestly
No property suits every trip, and Birkenhead House is a better fit for some than others. These are the points worth weighing before you book.
Price positioning. This is at the top of the Whale Coast market, and the rate usually includes more than a room-only booking elsewhere. Compare on what is included, not on the headline number.
You will drive to town. Voëlklip is residential and quiet; restaurants in central Hermanus are a short drive or a long walk.
Small property. Limited rooms means limited availability in whale season, and the spa and dining slots go quickly.
Wild animals, not an attraction. Whale sightings cannot be guaranteed on any given date, however good the position.

Getting there and getting around
Cape Town International is roughly 125 km away, generally about two hours. The N2 over Sir Lowry’s Pass is the practical route; the R44 coastal road through Betty’s Bay is the scenic one and worth doing at least once. A car is useful for the wine valley, Stanford and Gansbaai, though Birkenhead House can arrange transfers and excursions.

Against The Marine, you trade a walkable town-centre position for seclusion, beaches and a smaller property. Against a Hemel-en-Aarde guesthouse, Birkenhead House gives up the vineyards and gains the ocean. Against a self-catering house at Voëlklip, you gain staff, a spa, dining and the ability to do nothing at all.
Practical notes for a stay at Birkenhead House
Southern right whales are in Walker Bay from roughly June to December, peaking between September and November. The eastern end of the cliff path, below Birkenhead House, is quieter than the stretch through the town centre and often just as good for sightings. Grotto Beach, a long white-sand beach with Blue Flag status in season, is a few minutes away.
The Hemel-en-Aarde valley is the other reason to be here. It is about twenty minutes inland and produces some of the country’s best cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with the estates strung along one road. Three tastings and a lunch is a full and pleasant day.
Seasonally, December to February is hot, busy with South African holidaymakers and beach-focused. June to November is cooler, wetter and better for whales. Autumn, in March and April, is quiet and often has the best weather of the year.
