Hermanus sits on Walker Bay, which Hermanus Tourism describes as the mating and breeding ground of the southern right whale. The whales come up from the Antarctic around June to calve and mate, and the town rates July to November as the whale-watching window, with sightings close to certain in September, October and November. Whales can be watched from land, from a boat or from a scenic flight, and the Cliff Path runs for twelve kilometres from one end of Hermanus to the other, lined with viewpoints along its length.
