Location
Franschhoek sits at the closed end of a mountain valley settled by Huguenot refugees in 1688, and it is the most concentrated of the Winelands villages: a single main street of restaurants, galleries and tasting rooms, with wine farms running back along the valley floor on either side. Almost everything in the village itself is walkable, and the estates along the Main Road and up Robertsvlei, Verdun and Excelsior roads are a short drive out.

Getting there
Franschhoek is roughly 75 km from Cape Town, about an hour and a quarter by road via the N1 and R45 through Paarl, or over the Helshoogte Pass from Stellenbosch. There is no rail service to the village, so a car, a transfer or a wine-tour operator is necessary. The Franschhoek Wine Tram runs a hop-on circuit of estates from the village centre, which is the usual way to taste without driving.

Exploring Franschhoek from here
From here you can walk the main street’s restaurants and galleries, visit the Huguenot Memorial Museum and Monument, ride the wine tram between estates, or drive the Franschhoek Pass for the view back down the valley. Stellenbosch is half an hour over Helshoogte, Paarl about twenty-five minutes, and Cape Town a little over an hour away.

Summer, from December to March, is the peak: hot, dry and heavily booked, with the village busiest over the festive weeks. Harvest falls from February into April. The Bastille Festival in July fills the village mid-winter, and otherwise winter is quiet, green and the cheapest time to stay.
