Swellendam was established in 1745 and is the third-oldest town in South Africa, laid out in the foothills of the Langeberg on the inland side of the Overberg. The Drostdy Museum occupies the old magistrate complex in the historic centre. Bontebok National Park, the smallest of South Africa national parks, lies just outside the town, and the Marloth Nature Reserve adjoins Swellendam on the mountain side. Source: South African Tourism.
