Choosing a Garden Route experience

The Garden Route runs east from Mossel Bay through George, Wilderness, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay to the Tsitsikamma forests, with Oudtshoorn and the Klein Karoo inland over the Outeniqua Mountains. It is a long stretch of coast, so the first question is whether you are already there or travelling from Cape Town.

Products based in the region are single activities - lagoon and estuary cruises at Knysna, marine and wildlife trips from Plettenberg Bay, forest walks and zip lines in Tsitsikamma, and the Cango Caves and wildlife farms around Oudtshoorn. Products from Cape Town are multi-day touring itineraries, because the drive to Knysna alone is around six hours.

If you are building a self-drive trip, the single-activity products are the ones that fit. If you want the route covered for you, look for the multi-day itineraries and check how many nights they actually include.
