Wilderness

Wilderness is a small village where a chain of lakes runs behind a long beach, with the Touw River lagoon at its centre and forested hills rising immediately behind. It is one of the quietest bases on the Garden Route and one of the most compact, which means where a property sits matters more here than the town name does.

The accommodation is guesthouses and self-catering along the lagoon and up the hillside, plus the national park's own cabins and camping at Ebb-and-Flow, which are booked separately through the park rather than through booking sites. The lagoon-facing places go first, and the hillside properties trade the immediate water frontage for a wider view over the estuary and the sea.

Wilderness works best as a base for the walking trails, the lakes and the birdlife rather than as a town stay, because the village itself is small and the eating options are few. It is close enough to George for services and to Knysna for a day out, so it suits travellers who want a quiet address in the middle of the route. If beach swimming is the plan, it is worth reading up on conditions first, as this stretch of coast is not consistently supervised.
